Instruction

The main task of the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO, as stated in the standing instruction, as of 2003, is

  • to advice the Swedish government in UNESCO matters and on Swedish participation in UNESCO's activities
  • to inform, within Sweden, about UNESCO, its mission and programme.

Their working methods are

  • To diffuse information on UNESCO and to support Swedish involvement in UNESCO's work, in co-operation with other agencies
  • To function as a contact link between UNESCO and Swedish authorities, organisations or individuals
  • To implement decisions by the General Conference and take initiatives for suggestions and proposals to the General Conference
  • To nominate representatives to UNESCO meetings
  • To cooperate with National Commissions in other countries, especially the Nordic countries and the EU.

Members of the Commission are appointed by the Government for a period of four years and can be re-elected. The Government also appoints the Chair. The Chair and the Members represent UNESCO’s fields of competence (researchers, administrators from the central national agencies within the field of culture, education and science) and the two standing committees of the Parliament (culture and education). The Members are paid only a nominal amount for each meeting they attend.
