The work of the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO within the field of science

Science is the second largest field of programme within UNESCO. The overall purpose is to put the natural and social sciences in the service of a sustainable development and the main means is networking between institutions.

The work is carried out through five programmes: Basic Science, IHP – The International Hydrological Programme, MAB – The Man and Biosphere Programme, IGCP – The International Geological Correlation Programme, IOC – The International Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, MOST – Management of Social Transformations.

Swedish participation in these programmes is coordinated by a committee run by the Science Council. The committee reports back to the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO on the development of the programmes.
